Ecological monitoring in Mlele BKZ focus mostly on flora and fauna monitoring.

Flora monitoring is conducted through vegetation surveys. The first one was conducted in 2004, the second in 2013. Both studies confirmed the quality of habitat in the BKZ.

Wildlife monitoring is conducted since 2008 through regular camera trapping surveys and vehicle counts. Aggregated results from surveys conducted from 2008 to 2010 recorded 49 species of medium and large mammals, including 4 IUCN Red Listed Species, namely the wild dog (Lycaon pictus) Endangered; the African elephant (Loxodonta africana) Vulnerable, the lion (Panthera leo) Vulnerable; the leopard (Panthera pardus) Near Threatened.
